To help teen users who do not have much control over the ads they see, Meta has now added even more restrictions to ad targeting for teenagers.
Advertisers can no longer target teenage users based on their gender. According to Meta, gender-based targeting can reinforce gender discrimination.
Users under 18 will be able to show disinterest and opt out of ad topics they are not interested in from March onward.
This move is likely in response to Meta’s first Youth Safety & Well-Being Summit, held in Washington DC.
In this summit, meta invited child safety experts to discuss their way forward.
Advertisers can only target teen users based on their age and location.
“Age and location will be the only information about a teen that we’ll use to show them ads. Age and location help us continue to ensure teens see ads that are meant for their age and products and services available where they live.” – Meta
This is not the first time Meta has encouraged measures to promote privacy for their younger audience.
They already had quite a few ad restrictions in place. This move, ultimately, is in the best interest of teen users and will protect them from being manipulated by promotional content on their apps.
