Based on the time of the year, the 5 types of internship programs can be classified into:
- summer or winter internships
- semester internship
- spring internships
Summer internships are popular among college students who have fewer academic obligations and more free time during the summer break. It’s also possible to work as an intern for longer durations, or even year-round.
1. Paid Vs Unpaid Internships
Many companies offer unpaid internships in exchange for other perks like free food, opportunities to network, a glowing letter of recommendation, etc. Most freshers start their careers with unpaid work to gain experience.
Given a choice, though, you should always opt for paid internships.

2. Non-Profit Internships

3. Summer Internships
Summer internships usually last between eight to twelve weeks. In this type of internship program, you can either work full-time or on a part-time basis. This experience can give you a true sense of what it’s like to work in a specific job or career field.
Externships
Externships usually last for 1–3 weeks. Students typically spend their time in the office learning and understanding the work environment. Unlike internships, externships are mostly unpaid and are common among medical, legal, and accounting students.
